Across the river from Mission San Jose, in San Antonio, Texas, Camp Hot Wells provides an escape from the city with historical charm. They’re open every day from 12 to 10pm (through the summer) with hot sulphur water for public foot soaks or private bathing.
History
In 1892, a psychiatric facility discovered sulphuric water that was therapeutic but unpotable. A year later, McClellan Shacklett leased the water in the wells and built the original Hot Wells Hotel nearby.
After being burned down and rebuilt in 1894, well-known historical figures–Charlie Chaplin, Cecil B. DeMille, Teddy Roosevelt, etc.–and socialites frequented the spot for a luxurious soak. Most of the property burned again in 1925 and laid in disrepair after multiple subsequent fires.
In 1999, James Lifshutz took ownership with the hope of returning it to its former glory. It wasn’t until 2019 the Hot Wells of Bexar County Historical Park opened, and in 2020, Lifshutz launched the Hot Wells Interpretive Center for guests to further immerse themselves in the history of the property.
Tubs and Relaxation Space
Near the ruins of the Hot Wells Hotel, Camp Hot Wells has two covered, open-air, private bathing suites. The clawfoot suite, for one or two guests, offers two antique clawfoot porcelain tubs placed next to two small side tables with views of and access to a manicured private garden.
The cedar suite for two is a cedar tub, also with private garden access. Clothing is optional in both. Groups of up to ten people can rent both, and while not everyone can soak at once, there are lounge chairs and fire pits in the garden to kick back.
For those who just want to relax with a drink, the bar has an extensive list of beer, wine, cider, and nonalcoholic beverages along with snacks. Picnic tables and a hammock are also open for business.
As a added bonus, foot soaks are free for all bar patrons. Private baths are only for members, but memberships are free, so be sure to sign up. If you really enjoy yourself, consider booking it for your next event.
