Aerial view of Djúpavogskörin Hot Springs in Eastern Iceland

Djúpavogskörin Hot Springs – Djúpivogur, Iceland

February 6, 2023 By //  by Kristin Park

Djúpavogskörin Hot Springs is tucked away on the east coast of Iceland near the town of Djúpivogur. Sitting in this isolated tub without a house or building in sight can easily make you feel like the only person in the world.

Between the Ring Road, the not-so-distant snowy peaks, and the North Atlantic Ocean, Djúpavogskörin is surprisingly accessible for anyone looking to relax away from it all.

This cozy little soaking pool and deck were put up by locals for social gatherings and family fun. Djupivogur, the closest community, only has about 500 people today but was even smaller when it was settled in 1589 as a trading center.

Over the years, as more people visited the hot springs, the town began catering to visitors by adding cafes and campgrounds. Today, after spending time in Djúpavogskörin, bathers can head back to this quiet destination for food and a place to spend the night.

Natural Geothermal Pool and Other Activities

While it’s located just off the Ring Road, this man-made water tank is hidden from the sight of passersby thanks to a hillock perfectly located to block it from view. You and six or seven of your closest friends can make a day–or night–of it.

Encased by a wooden deck, there’s plenty of room for all of your gear as well. There’s even a small rack in the corner to hang clothes and towels out of reach of the water. Unless you’re comfortable changing in front of the people in your group, it’s best to come dressed in your swimsuit; there are no changing facilities available.

There’s not much else to do but relax and enjoy the unparalleled views. Under a mile (1.2km) down the road, Hálsaskógur, is a lovely forest with footpaths for people interested in an easy nature walk.

Getting There

Djúpavogskörin is a nice addition to any trip around Route 1, aka the Ring Road. If starting in Reykjavik take Highway 1 east.

About 341 miles (549km) later, 1.25 miles (2km) west of Djupivogur, Djúpavogskörin is on the right-hand side. Park in the small parking area provided and follow the unmarked path from the road for about 0.06 miles (100m) to reach the pool.
