The northeast Florida town of Green Cove Springs has a modest population of 9,786 (2020 census) and is home to a spring-fed community pool that natural spring hunters won’t want to miss. A park along the river and adjacent to the swimming area provides plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities.
History

Over 5,000 years ago, the first settlers were indigenous people drawn to the region for its warm natural water source. The spring water from “The Boil” source is also believed to have health benefits. This has largely contributed to tourism and the city’s development over the last century.
During the 1800s, this town was a popular vacation destination for many who wanted to experience the water and a reprieve from daily life.
Natural Spring City Pool

This seasonal spring-fed swimming pool is open from early May through the end of October. It offers a great spot to cool off during a hot summertime day.
In 2016, the pool was reconstructed and improved by adding a few new facility features like better bathrooms, a concession area, and a splash pad. Featuring a developed pool deck that’s great for sunbathing or relaxing by the water, the pool has been one of the town’s top attractions since 2017.
The 72℉ natural water pours into the city swimming pool at a rate of 2,200 gallons per minute. Water enters on the west side and then goes out east, producing a stream that empties into the St. Johns River. The gated environment is set near the creek and has a lovely nature ambiance while spending time outdoors.
Visitors can come to take a dip during the open season on Tuesdays through Sundays, but the facility is closed on Mondays for cleaning. There is an entry fee for visitors over the age of two, but discounted rates are offered for military members, seniors, and children.
Spring Park Activities

Spring Park is right next to the community pool and is set along the St. Johns River. Not only does it host many annual town events, but it’s also a go-to spot for some fresh air by the water.
Visitors are welcome to come to enjoy the park daily from sunrise to sunset. Use the top-notch covered shelters, playground equipment, and grassy areas for reading or picnicking. The river views around the park are beautiful, which can be seen from the fishing pier, boardwalk, and numerous trails throughout the area.
In April 2020, a new 150-foot dock for kayak launching was added to the park.
