Located near the town of Silver Springs, Juniper Springs Recreation Area includes a large pool with a cement wall, surrounded by beauty from every angle of the Ocala National Forest. Around 13 million gallons of pure springs water flows through the area, created in the 1930s, along with the campground and picnicking spots.
Juniper Springs is one of the East Coast’s oldest and most well-known rec areas. In the early 20th century, the Civilian Conservation Corps worked to build a facility for visitors to enjoy.
Park-goers will notice a water wheel in motion on the property, which was also constructed in the 1930s when the rest of the area was developed. Back in those days, the wheel was used to generate power for the campground, but now it’s just decorative and commemorates the past.
Natural Springs
Juniper Springs is a second-magnitude natural water source with an elongated pool of approximately 120 feet by 90 feet. On the pool bottom, there are numerous limestone vents, sand boils, and aquatic grasses in other sections. The spring headwaters are what feed the Juniper Creek, which runs for a few miles into Lake George.
The springs pool keeps a temperature of about 72℉ and is the main swimming area.
Other Activities
Kayaking and canoeing down the spring run offer a scenic ride on the water, but be sure to have a ride back as there is no return transportation at the end.
This boating path is nationally recognized and has been named in the top 25 canoe runs in the country by ReserveAmerica. Inflatable vessels are not permitted on the run.
Other popular activities in the area include picnicking, hiking, wildlife viewing, snorkeling, and birding. No fishing is allowed in the springs or runs, and wading isn’t permitted in the runs. Pets are not allowed in the day-use zones.
Camping
Juniper Springs Recreation Area is one of the most popular places in the region for camping and is recognized nationwide for its family-friendly location. The lovely tree canopies provide a lot of natural shade and give campers an authentic outdoor experience.
An added benefit of staying a night or two is being in such proximity to the springs and swimming area. 79 campsites are suitable for tent and RV camping, equipped with amenities like flush toilets, picnic tables, and non-potable water.
