Nestled in the Icelandic highlands, Kerlingarfjöll Hot Spring (also known as the ‘hot pool’) is a popular soaking spot for locals and visitors alike. The reddish mountains and iron-rich soil around the small soaking pool add to the area’s rural feel.
Kerlingarfjöll can be found east of Kjölur along the F347 road and between the Langjökull and Hofsjökull Glaciers. It’s located about 3.5 hours from Reykjavik and 5.5 hours from Akureyri, not too far from the famous scenic route, the Golden Circle. Its coordinates are GPS 64°38’17.3 “N 19°17’23.3 “W.
Natural Hot Spring Pool
The easiest way to access this natural tub is from the Kerlingarfjoll Mountain Resort, which is especially busy with campers and guests during the summer months. This property is only accessible with a 4 x4 vehicle during the summer months, but there are tours that can bring you here at other times of the year.
From the parking lot, hike the 1.5 km/0.9-mile trail that runs beside a gentle stream. The path is well-marked, and it only takes about 20 minutes to reach the pool one way.
After arriving at the hot spring, visitors will find a rock-walled pool alongside the river. There’s enough for 10 to 15 people to use the water at once. The thermal mineral water ranges in temperature from around 34-37 °C/93-98 °F, with the highest temperatures concentrated in the center.
There are no changing rooms, so remember to bring a dry bag to keep your clothing dry while you swim. Please do not leave any trash, swimwear, or undergarments behind after utilizing the pool. During the peak tourist season, an official may ask for a contribution in exchange for using the parking lot and hot pool, so it’s wise to have some cash.
