Miranda Hot Springs is just over an hour’s drive from Auckland, making it a nice little getaway for the day. Multiple thermal pools sit on two acres of landscaped space with all the makings for family fun.
In the distance, vibrant grassy hills, the pristine nature New Zealand is so famous for, line the horizon.
While the Ngāti Paoa tribe has used these springs for many generations, Pākehā, or non-Maori people, couldn’t access it until the mid-20th century due to the lack of roads. It wasn’t until after World War II, when swimming and soaking became even more popular, that the area was developed.
The current facilities were built in 1959-1960 and include what is considered the largest thermal swimming pool in the southern hemisphere.
Pools and Playground
Miranda Hot Springs offers three thermal pools for all ages to enjoy. The largest is a 154×56-foot outdoor swimming pool with water temperature ranging from 96℉ to 100℉ (36-38℃) and aqua-lift accessibility. For a relaxing soak, the adults-only sauna pool under the shelter of a roof offers a warmer option, from 104℉ to 106℉ (40-41℃).
The coolest option is the children’s pool. A playground and game room provide even more entertainment when one of the little ones gets tired of the water. For more privacy, four indoor private spa pools are also available for you and your party.
Picnic tables and coin-operated electric barbecues set you up for a day full of fun, but if you don’t want to cook, an onsite cafe offers plenty of hot dishes. Swimwear and towels are on hand to rent if something gets left at home.
Miranda Hot Springs is 52 miles southeast of Auckland. Take State Highway 1 south for about 31 miles until you get to Pokeno. Use exit 477 to merge onto State Highway 2, and continue east for another 4.5 miles.
Exit towards Mangatawhiri/Miranda/Kaiaua/Mangatangi Marae and keep left at the fork. Stay on Mangatawhiri Rd. Then, follow Miranda road for about 9 miles to the springs. It will be on the left.
