Located in Elk City within the Nez Perce Clearwater National Forest, Red River Hot Springs & Lodge is a remote resort hidden away at an elevation of 5,000 feet along the Red River. It’s tucked away in northern-central Idaho, about 2 hours east of the city of Grangeville, ID.
The Nez Perce Indians visited the hot springs over a century ago, but today it’s a geothermal resort that offers terrific natural experiences along with a hot springs tub and an outdoor pool. This establishment is open for day visitors but also has overnight lodging available.
Natural Hot Springs
The 80′ x 65′ pool and jacuzzi at the resort are all-natural and not chemically treated in any way. Even though the water is cleaned regularly, algae can sometimes grow in it. This is harmless and reminds swimmers that they are in pure natural geothermal water.
The temperature can fluctuate slightly with the season, but on average, it comes out of the ground at 130℉.
Other Activities
Whether visitors are new to spending time outside or experienced adventurers, there is something for everyone at this back-to-basics resort. In this area, you can find miles of hiking trails, ride all-terrain vehicles, hunt, fish, snowmobile, cross-country ski, and do many other things.
You can also harvest berries and mushrooms. This is all made possible by the valley’s warmer waters and moist plains.
Lodging and Camping
Four rustic lodge rooms, three cottages, and tent campsites are available for overnight stays. Three RV sites are also available; however, they lack utilities. Both lunch and supper are available at Red River. The resort has a café for visitors’ convenience.
