Unfortunately, the Skinny Dipper Hot Springs is likely still closed.
Located on BLM land, and surrounded by the Boise National Forest, the Skinny Dipper Hot Springs was one of the most popular hot springs in the area. While many of Idaho’s hot springs have been in use for quite some time, the Skinny Dipper Hot Springs has only been open since the mid-1990s.
The three hot spring pools are located on a steep hill near the Payette River. They have been reinforced with rock and mortar and have sand and gravel bottoms.
Mineral Hot Springs
The first hot spring pool you will see upon arrival has a diameter of about 15 feet, while the other pools are smaller and can only fit a few people each. From the hot spring source, the water is about 160°F, which combines with cold water to create a more reasonable temperature. The three pools vary in temperature, so you are sure to find one that is comfortable.
Unfortunately, the Skinny Dipper Hot Springs site is often in poor condition, so you should be prepared to encounter trash and broken glass if you make a trip. Please do what you can to keep the area clean and do not leave any trace of your visit!
Though accessible year-round and free to visit, weather conditions such as rain and snow can make the trail very difficult to climb, as it quickly becomes very slippery. Additionally, mudslides frequently occur along Banks-Lowman Highway.
After a steep 0.5-mile hike from Banks-Lowman Highway, you will be amazed to see views of the nearby valley, as well as the three hot springs pools perfect for soaking and enjoying the natural beauty in the area.
This hot spring is very popular, so you may want to plan your trip for weekdays or mornings in order to guarantee that there will be space.
If you would like to stay in the area for longer than just a day, there are numerous campsites, both primitive and developed, within the Boise National Forest. These sites are about 10-20 minutes away from the hot springs, so you can easily rest there overnight before returning to the springs the next day.
