History

As Rudolph Plegge stood over his well, he couldn’t help but wonder why this water was slowly wearing down the surface of his cookware and causing leaks. Fed up, he took a sample of the water to get tested and the results he received started a chain of events that quickly brought attention and acclaim to his small plot of land.

Soon after learning that the water was rich in magnesium and sulfur, comparable to other well-known baths and hot springs, he and his neighbor had the ingenious idea to construct a bathhouse on the land. Mineral spring resorts were popping up all over the place, thanks to the health benefits that they provide. With his newfound mineral-rich water, he and took a chance and established a small mineral bathhouse.

Although Rudolph Plegge’s original bathhouse burned down 30 years later, a new one was built in its place and continues to stand as a relic to the late 19th century. Going through a series of name changes, the Original Springs Motel has steadily been modernized and is now the only operational mineral spa in Illinois. In 1978 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places and continues to attract visitors due to its beautiful natural scenery, healing waters, and relaxing amenities.

The Mineral Spring Baths and Heated Pool

Soaking in the mineral water at the Original Springs Hotel is an individual healing experience, where you get to relax in a private bath. As the water is not heated from the ground, like a typical hot spring would be, boilers within the building heat it to 110 degrees F. While soaking in your private bath, you can also readjust the temperature at your own discretion.

When you are shown to your private soaking area, the attendant will provide you with a cup to allow you to easily drink the clean, mineral water. While merely soaking in the pool provides numerous benefits, drinking the water allows for your body to heal from the inside.  They also offer cold pitchers of mineral water available at request during your stay.

The 84 degrees F heated pool is not mineral-based but is a great place to relax and swim laps. The elegant look of the pool room gives the impression of being outdoors, while within the comfort of an indoor space.
