Veyo Pool & Crawdad Canyon – Veyo, Utah

November 23, 2020 By //  by Sean Jarvis

For those hoping to swim, rock climb, catch crawdads, and watch poolside movies at night, look no further than Veyo Pool & Crawdad Canyon. Located in Veyo, Utah this site is the perfect place to cool off during the summer and spend quality time with family.

History

Well known as a hot spot for swimming and soaking, year-long barbecues, and live music and dancing, Veyo Pool has attracted many visitors over the past 95 years.

Veyo Pool was first established in the 1920s and has proven to be a charming destination spot. With its clear spring water pool situated between tall trees and towering cliffs, it’s the perfect place to bring the family for a summer getaway.

Since the mid-90s, ownership has changed hands a few times. During those transitions, the rock-climbing park was built and the pool was upgraded. In 2018, new additions such as high-speed WIFI, new locker rooms, and extended campground facilities have been added.

The Warm Springs Pool

The large, outdoor pool is filled with crystal clear, geothermal mineral water, straight from the source. The water is treated with a small amount of ozone and chlorine to prevent bacterial growth, but you won’t notice these additions. The mineral pool is emptied and the pool is brushed down every evening before refilled with fresh water from the natural spring.

The source water is 83°F and by the time it reaches the pool, it has cooled to 75°-80°F. A large deck surrounds the pool and patio chairs and a shaded area are present for escaping the sun. There are a handful of tables with umbrellas, the perfect place to enjoy some delicious food from their restaurant. Additionally, there is an outdoor shower.

Note: The pool is handicap accessible.

Activities

Rock Climbing

Hosting the only private outdoor rock-climbing park in Utah, the wall at Veyo Park boasts 234 bolted climbing routes. Built into solid basalt walls that go 85 feet up into the sky, the routes vary in difficulty from 5.6 to 5.13. This makes the vertical challenge fun and exciting for all skill levels.

To scale this massive wall, you must bring your climbing equipment. There is no equipment at Veyo Pool for rent or purchase.

Crawdad Catching

One of the largest draws to Veyo Pool & Crawdad Canyon, other than the refreshing pool itself, is crawdad catching! Home to a massive population of crawdads, thanks to the multitude of small, warm springs that flow into the river, these little creatures can be caught year-round.

As a catch and release activity, this is a great way to reconnect with nature and relax by the river. The Veyo Pool offers crawdad catching kits, which provide you with everything you will need for your afternoon adventure.

Other activities offered at the Veyo Pool include volleyball, horseshoes, movie nights, a variety of hiking trails, and wildlife viewing from the canyon cliffs.

Camping

Campsites at the Veyo Pool & Crawdad Canyon are located along the private canyon that overlooks the Santa Clara River. Camping here is a great way to find reprieve from the summer heat, as the temperatures are much cooler thanks to all the shade offered by the steep canyon walls.

There are 31 different campsites, split up into 4 varieties:

  • Basic Campsite – Hosts ~4 guests | 1 picnic table
  • Premium Riverside Campsite – Alongside the Santa Clara River | Hosts ~4 guests | 1 picnic table
  • Premium View Campsite – More privacy | Located off the trail | Scenic views | Hosts ~4 guests
  • Ultimate Camp Site – Open-air fire pit | 400% larger campsites | Hosts ~10 guests | 2 picnic tables

Each campsite allows one vehicle, based on availability.  There are no open-flame fires allowed in the canyon, other than at the Ultimate Campsite which is surrounded by canyon walls. You can rent covered fire pits on a first come first serve basis.

All campers will need to purchase a Canyon Access Pass for every day that they stay. No trailers or RVs are allowed, though there is a parking area at the top of the canyon for these vehicles. Check-in time is between 4:30 and 8:00 pm, with check-out being at 10:30 am.
