Wairakei Terraces and Thermal Health Spa is a North Island destination on its own complete with thermal pools, a chance to relax in nature, and a path through the geothermal activity. This adults-only paradise is a stress-free getaway.
For those wanting to spend some time in the area, head five minutes down the road to Huka Falls. There are also tons of things to see and do a few minutes further south in Taupo and on Lake Taupo.
The thermal waters here have long been used by Maori for healing, bathing, and general wellness. It wasn’t until around 1700, the outside world found out and began making their way to the area to “take the waters.”
Adult-only Thermal Pools
Three thermal, adults-only pools lie at the feet of picturesque silica terraces that transfer their minerals into the already medicinal water. Different temperatures are maintained in order to suit a variety of preferences.
All around the property, peace and tranquility reign amidst native flora and fauna. Guests can take the meditational self-guided terrace walk alongside the Te Kiri o Hinekai stream to get closer to the sounds of birds and moving water. Through otherworldly steam along the path, detailed carvings of the Maori and local tribe as well as a man-made geyser are connections to the land’s history.
Cafeteria and Spa
When hunger strikes, a licensed cafeteria with a range of non-alcoholic beverages, toasted sandwiches, cheese platters and breakfast options is on-site and ready for business. You don’t need a pass for the pools to eat at the cafe.
As with many commercialized hot springs, there are massage and facials offered in the spa. If you’ve forgotten something at home in anticipation of your visit, you can rent swimwear, towels, and robes from reception.
Getting There
From Auckland, head south on SH 1 at Grifton. Continue to follow the road for about 163 miles nearly to Taupo. At the roundabout, use the third exit to Wairakei Drive towards Taupo and Huka Falls. Then, take the next right to Wairakei Road. The Wairakei Terraces will be on the left.
