History

Halcyon Hot Springs Resort - Canada

For centuries, the First Nations people, predominately part of the Sinixt First Nation, relied on the healing benefits of the springs. In the late 1800s, they introduced Captain Robert Sanderson to the source of the spring. Enamored, Robert bought the land and turned it into a hotel.

Robert named the hot springs after a Greek myth about a woman who, consumed by grief for her deceased husband, attempted to drown herself. Instead of dying, she transformed into a bird, who was rumored to calm the ocean, for two weeks in the year, to protect her eggs. Her name was Halcyon. She exemplified peace, healing, and calmness. The resort was aptly named to title the peaceful patch of paradise nestled in and around the hot springs.

Throughout the last 150 years, the ownership changed many times and the hot springs became the focal point for everything from a gambling home to a Sanctorum. It was later turned into a place of relaxation and healing once more—one that honored the timeless restorative power of the hot spring.
