Guide to Oregon’s Natural Hot Springs

Despite its reputation as a constantly cloudy, rainy state, Oregon is a large place with a diverse arrangement of climates and geography. From the sprawling high desert in the east that takes up nearly a quarter of Oregon’s landmass to the stunning Cascade Mountains, Oregon is a beautiful state that is much more varied than its reputation leads visitors to believe.

Luckily, Oregon is also home to a large set of hot spring pools that are spread out throughout the state. Any trip to the state can be improved with a visit to one of Oregon’s relaxing hot springs. They make a great apres-ski activity after visiting one of Oregon’s ski slopes.

Traveling to one of Oregon’s hot springs is the perfect way to experience the stunning, diverse geography of the Beaver State. Many of Oregon’s hot springs are situated near and along the Cascade Mountains, but great opportunities for soaking abound elsewhere in the state as well. In fact, some hot springs can even be reached within just a few hours of Portland.

Oregon’s hot springs can be divided into two separate types: primitive hot springs and resort-style hot springs. While they have their clear differences, both types of hot springs are sure to provide visitors with a great opportunity for soaking in healing, geothermally heated mineral water amid Oregon’s intense natural beauty.

Primitive Hot Springs in OR

Often characterized by beautiful, remote sites, primitive hot springs are undeveloped mineral water pools that are usually free to access. These hot spring pools are often situated in gorgeous locations, but, as a result, they’re sometimes hard to access.

Though they may sometimes require a lengthy hike or a four-wheel-drive vehicle to find, Oregon’s primitive hot springs are the perfect site for those who prefer an authentic, natural experience over luxury.

For a great example of one of these beautiful primitive hot springs, look at Juntura Hot Springs outside of Juntura, Oregon. It’s set on an island, so it’s not the easiest hot spring to access, but Juntura Hot Springs provides visitors with beautiful views and healing mineral water.

It’s important to note that Oregon’s primitive hot springs generally do not feature any amenities. Also, there are usually no facilities except for the occasional outhouse, so guests should be prepared to be self-sufficient during a visit.

With that being said, soakers should consider camping nearby when possible. Though primitive camping may not be the most comfortable experience, it can greatly enhance a visit to Oregon’s hot springs by extending the hours available for soaking.

Even though primitive hot springs may not be the right choice for everyone, they’re a great choice for those who are searching for a cheap, enjoyable experience that provides a deep connection to nature. They may not be luxurious, but primitive hot springs are a great, budget-friendly option.

Hot Spring Resorts in OR

Instead of an intense, natural experience, Oregon also features a variety of hot spring resorts that cater to the more traditional guest. Unlike primitive hot springs, these hot spring resorts are known for their beautiful facilities and amenities.

They’re the perfect option for the guest who is hoping for a more comfortable experience while still maintaining a focus on the healing qualities of naturally heated mineral water.

To best enjoy a visit to one of these remarkable hot spring resorts, guests should be sure to take advantage of all of the amenities offered. Hot spring resorts come with a higher price tag than their primitive counterparts, but the variety of amenities like world-class spa facilities, daily breakfast, and yoga classes definitely make the cost worth it.

Oregon’s wide array of hot spring offers is sure to please all types of visitors. Whether you prefer luxurious accommodations or camping among the stars, The Beaver State definitely has a hot spring that will fit the bill.
