Travertine Hot Springs

Travertine Hot Springs – Bridgeport, California

October 21, 2021 By //  by William Reavis

Travertine Hot Springs is an easily accessible, geothermal pool located just a few miles off Highway 395 near the town of Bridgeport, California. Travertine Hot Springs provides visitors with the opportunity to soak in geothermally heated mineral water amidst the breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Due to its convenient location, Travertine Hot Springs is often very crowded. It is recommended that guests visit during the week to help not only ensure seclusion but also a tranquil atmosphere. Additionally, many guests enjoy soaking in the hot springs without clothing, so additional privacy may be appreciated when visiting outside of peak hours.

Hot Spring Pools

Used for hundreds of years by indigenous people, the Travertine Hot Springs contains five different geothermal pools. Unlike most hot spring pools in the area, which are constructed from concrete, Travertine Hot Springs offers four naturally lined, mud pools. Many visitors decide to coat their faces, arms, and chests with this mud due to its therapeutic properties.

The pools vary in temperature and size, so visitors are sure to find one that fits their needs. Geothermally heated mineral water emerges from the ground at 180 degrees Fahrenheit but, due to man-made water channels, cools down to a comfortable temperature before flowing into the pools.

Camping

Unfortunately, camping is not allowed in the immediate vicinity of the hot spring pools, but visitors may choose to camp on any of the pullouts along the dirt road that leads to the parking area. There are no facilities of any kind except a small outhouse, so visitors must be prepared to be self-contained.

For those who enjoy this minimalist camping experience, camping near Travertine Hot Springs provides the ultimate opportunity for secluded soaking. Since most visitors prefer visiting during the day, those that decide to camp enjoy uninterrupted access to the pools during the early morning and late night.

The dirt road to Travertine Hot Springs is not plowed during the winter months, so access to the springs and the surrounding area is limited to warmer temperatures. Make sure to check weather conditions before venturing to the hot springs.

The Travertine Hot Springs offers a moment of tranquility in the Bridgeport area.

Getting There

  1. Go on Jack Sawyer Road, headed south
  2. Take the second left that is at the fork of the road.
  3. Eventually, this road will turn into a dirt road.
  4. Keep going until the road ends. When you see a little outhouse, you made it! Park to the side of the road.
