History
In 1887, Mark Twain wrote to a local paper about the incomparable splendor of Walley’s Hot Springs. He noted that
“These springs, without a doubt, have no equal on this coast for the cure of rheumatism and all afflictions that necessitate me visiting them. I now leave without crutch or cane, entirely well, not only relieved from pain but gained in spirit.”
And, suffice to say, not much has changed when it comes to the healing magic that soaking in the mineral-rich water brings.
David Walley moved from New York to Genoa in the 1860s in search of fame and riches. Like many who traveled west, Walley was searching for gold, but instead of finding the precious metal, he found something equally notable.
After a hard day at work, Walley decided to soak in one of the hot springs near his job site, and in doing so, experienced the healing nature of the mineral-rich water. Encouraged by this restorative soak, he purchased the land around the hot springs and started charging a small fee.
As his hot springs received more and more attention, he and his wife quickly rose to the occasion and started constructing a resort. Thanks to the famed Pony Express, which had a route that ran right next to his hot springs, business exploded.
In 1862, the resort was finished and boasted a 40-room hotel, complete with a horse stable, grand ballroom, massive swimming pool, and several bathhouses.
What was once a haven for exhausted miners and day workers soon became the go-to spot for the wealthy and affluent. Attracting stars across the country, some of their first well-known clients to the springs were Mark Twain and Carol Lombard, as well as a revolving door of US presidents.
Since those days, the resort has undergone a few transformations, mostly due to fires that destroyed some of the buildings, as well as added modern upgrades. You can still enjoy some of the original architecture and soak in the same pools that hosted famous movie stars and musicians of the day.

Natural Hot Springs Pools
When visiting David Walley’s Hot Springs Resort, you will find yourself taking a trip back in time, thanks to the long-standing original architecture. There are seven soaking tubs with temperatures ranging from 98°F to 104°F at the resort. These pools are fed directly from the source and the water is recycled every 3 hours for cleanliness.
Rich in potassium, sulfur, and sodium, these waters have been highly regarded as a healing elixir. They are great for improving a variety of conditions including arthritis, back pain, dry skin, and respiratory issues.
There is also a freshwater relaxation pool, which stays at a near-constant 85°F. It’s a great warm-up or cool-down between dips in the hot springs pools.
