Mineral Hot Springs
Kerosene Creek is nestled amidst the intriguing volcanic zone of New Zealand. Hot water from a natural spring underneath bubbles into the creek, creating warm and inviting waters that typically hover around 30°C (86°F).
When visiting Kerosene Creek, you have many soaking options. Many guests prefer to float along with the current, enjoying all of the magical views. Others prefer to sit back and relax in one of the primitive pools carved out by a series of small, smooth rocks. Still, you can bask beneath the gorgeous waterfall, offering a unique and thrilling experience.
This geothermally heated creek is entirely free to visit, making it a must-add to your New Zealand bucket list. Remember to pack everything you need in, and pack everything you brought with you back out. As this is a primitive hot springs, there aren’t any facilities around.
Getting There
Although Kerosene Creek can be considered a New Zealand “gem”, it isn’t hard to find. It’s approximately a 25-minute drive from Rotorua and right before the famous Waiotapu Geothermal Wonderland.
Here’s how to get there:
- Take State Highway 5 South from Rotura (going toward Taupo)
- Continue for 30km (0.6 miles)
- Pass the turnoff for Marupara/Lake Ngahewa
- Turn left onto Old Waiotapu Road
- Continue on the gravel road for 2.2 km (1.3 miles)
- Park when you come across the grassy area on the right
- Walk down the track until you reach Kerosene Creek
