Thermal springs tub with mountain view at Onsen Hot Pools in Queenstown, NZ

Onsen Hot Pools – Queenstown, New Zealand

July 14, 2023 By //  by Michelle Keldgord

The Onsen Hot Pools Retreat & Day Spa is undeniably one of the most serene and high-end soaking spots right outside of Queenstown, NZ. With a combination of private and luxurious cedar-lined tubs and panoramic views of the Shotover River and surrounding mountain ranges, you can escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy a tranquil experience you won’t soon forget.

The resort originally opened in 2007 and instantly became an iconic spot to indulge in a “kiwi twist” of a famous Japanese bathing tradition. Since then, the spa has continued to grow in popularity and won the World Luxury Spa Award in 2021.

This charming destination offers 14 exquisite tubs for day use. Of the 14 tubs, you’ll find indoor and outdoor options with a stunning cedar-lined aesthetic surrounded by Japanese lanterns to enhance the mood. The tubs are filled with pure water from the surrounding mountains and heated to a cozy 101℉ (38.5℃).

Several fantastic soaking options are available at the this retreat and day spa. Keep in mind that all experiences come with the following: a complimentary drink, snack, and private showers.

The Original Onsen

The Original Onsen is idyllically situated to offer breathtaking views of the mountains and river. The tubs can accommodate up to four people, making it the ideal choice for slightly larger groups of guests. Rest and relax in the invigorating waters for up to 60 minutes and enjoy a retractable roof that instantly transforms the area into an indoor or outdoor experience.

The Outdoor Onsen

The Outdoor Onsen tubs are optimal for those who prefer an experience more connected to the outdoors. Enjoy a 60-minute soak with sensational panoramic views. These tubs can also accommodate up to four individuals, each separated by lush planting, ensuring a private and serene experience.

The Oval Onsen

Are you looking for more privacy? The Oval Onsen tubs are smaller and best situated for one or two guests. These tubs are strategically placed on their own personal decks with enchanting views in every direction. This 60-minute experience can be personalized with bath scents and/or salts to enhance your experience.

This luxurious destination isn’t just for soaking. With the on-site day spa, you can easily take your visit up a notch and leave feeling like a brand-new human being. The spa has two experiences to choose from.

Serenity Soak & Spa

This experience begins with a lavish 45-minute soak in a newer, smaller oval tub. During your visit, you’ll submerge in gloriously heated waters while enjoying picturesque views of nature. Once finished, an experienced therapist will perform your chosen face or body treatment. This experience comes in one and two-hour package options.

Ultimate Relaxation Experience

If that’s not enough indulgence, you can opt for the Ultimate Relaxation Experience. Like the Serenity Soak & Spa, you’ll begin your trek with a 45-minute soak in one of the gorgeous cedar-lined tubs. Then, you’ll be spoiled with a face or body treatment. The experience ends with a visit to the high-end lounge, where you will pamper your palate with delicious and nutritious herbal teas and refreshments.

The Onsen Hot Pools & Day Spa is easy to find and can be reached by any vehicle. However, one of the perks this boutique spa offers is its complimentary shuttle bus to and from central Queenstown. So, if you’re staying in Queenstown, you might consider taking advantage of this opportunity (it’s free!).

To use the shuttle bus, you’ll need to book it at the same time as your package. Note that the spa does not offer transportation for groups over nine. They are only available for pool booking on the hour, for example, 1 pm, 3 pm, and 4 pm.
