Pool Party at Sand Springs Pool and Recreation Center

Sand Springs Pool & Recreation Center – Williamstown, Massachusetts

March 29, 2022 By //  by Sean Jarvis

The Sand Springs Pool and Recreation Center, located in Williamstown, Massachusetts is one of the oldest natural spas in North America. Ushering in guests for the past 250 years, this spring is regarded as one of the most popular healing locations in the Northeast.

Every minute, four-hundred gallons of water are replenished from the underground aquifer, situated 2800 feet below the surface. The origin of this water helps the thermal spring maintain a constant temperature of 72 degrees F.

Sand Springs History

New England is known for its pristine natural beauty, and the land around the warm springs is no exception. As a rich source of inspiration and enjoyment, visitors of Sand Springs have engaged in a variety of pastimes, from swimming and soaking to dancing and fine dining.

Over the years, the land has been purchased by different individuals, with each new owner adding buildings and attractions. From a sprawling inn and bathhouse that can accommodate 250 guests, to a bottling company advertising the spring water as a curative elixir, every owner has left their mark. Even some of the buildings from the late 1800s are still standing to this day!

In the past, tribes from the 5 nations used the springs as both a water source and a place of medicine. Numerous ancient artifacts, such as Native American arrowheads and pottery, have been discovered on-site.

When the previous owners were looking to close the springs in 2008, the community came together and raised enough money to save and restore the property. Currently, the Sand Springs Pool & Recreation Center is managed by a non-profit organization that has created a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere for visitors to enjoy.

Activities at the Sand Springs

The Sand Springs Pool & Recreation Center has many different activities to suit all interests and age groups. While visiting, you can laze away the day napping on a lounge chair, take a dip in the swimming pool, then play a game of volleyball or basketball with other members of your community.
