History
Deception Island was once a bustling area mainly used for whaling. It was also home to many scientific stations from countries across the globe.
Although the caldera was known as a haven from raging storms and icebergs, it still wasn’t a safe bet – after all, the island is situated atop an active volcano. This volcano erupted twice in the 1960s, demolishing everything in its path and leaving nothing but a trace of ruin and ash.

Soakers must create their own personal, temporary thermal tub to enjoy the hot springs of Deception Island. To do so, you’ll have to dig a small pool that allows boiling waters to emerge, then create channels from the ocean to cool it down until it’s manageable.
Once you’ve found the ideal temperature and have enough room for you (and others) to sit back and relax, plunge into your temporary tub and enjoy the unique scenery of Deception Island. Take a glance at the ash-covered remains of a once thriving location and take in the awe-inspiring views of the snow-capped Antarctica mountains.

Other Activities
Deception Island is a majestic caldera that is steeped in history. However, due to the volcanic activity on the island, it’s not a safe spot for new buildings or tourist spots to be developed.
That doesn’t mean there’s nothing more to do on Deception Island.
Because it’s not entirely covered by ice, travelers can explore the area on foot. There are many admirable hiking spots, including the trek from Whalers Bay to Neptune’s Window and South East Point. During your jaunt, you’ll run into an immense collection of leftover ruins of the 1960s eruptions, offering an up close and personal look into the past.
While exploring, you may be lucky enough to spot some wildlife. Although this region has scarce animals, travelers may see Cape Pigeons, Black-Bellied Storm Petrels, Brown and South Polar Skuas, and Chinstrap Penguins.
